Supporting Grenada

A precious harvest, extraordinary chocolate and a chance to help

Grenada has a very special place in our hearts. For more than two decades, we have been closely involved with the Grenada Chocolate Company, founded in 2001 by Mott Green, Edmond Brown and Doug Browne. This pioneering business demonstrated that cocoa could be grown, processed and transformed into exceptional chocolate on the island itself, keeping more of its value within the local community.

Our own nine-acre Grococo Farm, in Hermitage in the north of Grenada, has traditionally donated its cocoa harvest to the Grenada Chocolate Company, supporting its farmers, workers and chocolate makers.

Before the hurricane and the long road to recovery

Just before Hurricane Beryl struck Grenada in July 2024, we were extraordinarily fortunate to have shipped 450kg of dried cocoa beans from Grococo Farm to Britain.

These beans would normally have been donated to the Grenada Chocolate Company but had fallen outside the organic certification system. Although grown using organic methods, they could no longer be sold as certified organic.

Rather than let this wonderful cocoa go to waste, we invited three exceptionally talented independent chocolate makers to transform it into a collection of limited-edition bars:

• Pump Street Chocolate – 66% Dark Chocolate with Cocoa Nibs, a tribute to Mott Green, the visionary co-founder of the Grenada Chocolate Company.
• Table Chocolate – 58% Dark Milk Chocolate, celebrating the naturally rich and complex flavours of Grenadian cocoa.
• Neary Nogs – 67% Dark Chocolate, crafted in the Mourne Mountains of Northern Ireland, showcasing the distinctive character of these remarkable beans.

We have also collaborated with Firetree Chocolate on our Ginger and Sour Cherry chocolates, another delicious celebration of Grenadian cocoa.

Hurricane Beryl caused devastating damage to Grenada’s cocoa-growing communities, particularly in the north of the island, following an already difficult period of prolonged drought.

Although there are encouraging signs of recovery, cocoa trees take years to regenerate and new plantings need time to become productive. The next harvest is not yet ready, and it remains uncertain how much cocoa will be available.

Cocoa beans have become a rare and precious commodity in Grenada, particularly those from certified organic farms.

Sadly, this also means that we remain unable to replenish our regular range of Grenada Chocolate Company bars and cocoa powder. We very much hope to see these wonderful products return, but cannot yet say when supplies will recover sufficiently.

Every bar makes a difference

We still have a limited quantity of our special-edition chocolate bars, made from that precious pre-hurricane harvest. Once they have sold out, we cannot be certain when, or even whether, we will be able to make them again.

100% of the sales proceeds from these special-edition bars, excluding VAT, will be sent back to Grenada to support the Grenada Chocolate Company and its cocoa-growing community.

By buying one of these bars, you are not only enjoying some truly exceptional chocolate, but also helping the farmers and chocolate makers whose livelihoods depend on this remarkable crop.

It is our way of maintaining a connection with an island, its people and a chocolate-making tradition that means so much to us.
