It’s been a while, lots of bird activity to repo

It’s been a while, lots of bird activity to report…

For the last few months we have been crazy busy, moving offices, buying and selling houses, now we are back, settled in and raring to go for the Autumn Winter.

Exciting news - we have new bird eggs, thanks to @madeleinefloyddesign studio - appearances from the shy #nightingale, as requested by @kneppwildingkitchen and to add to the #stork and #turtledoves which they have so successfully nurtured.

Other birds featured, the beloved #barnowl, and the #swift, which we have enjoyed watching reeling above our new home near #burgesspark . We have even installed a special swift box from @cj_wildlife and hoping that next year the swifts might find it and raise some young here.

The #lovebirds have been such a favourite, so we have gone wild and created the rainbow version based on the African Lovebird.

Finally for those who have American affiliations, the #robin (which is actually a thrush) is a bit different to our wee bird, and made an appearance in the original 1964 Disney Mary Poppins as a clunky wind-up bird at the window, singing to Mary.

For the #redparty - we have a #redcardinal for the #blueparty a #bluejay and for those who don’t want to engage in politics we have the wise #baldeagle

Today would have been my dear mother Sybil’s 98t

Today would have been my dear mother Sybil’s 98th birthday, she almost made it to 95. She taught me much, I didn’t realise at the time how much I had absorbed until recently when I was able to identify 4 wild flowers growing in Iceland. Her great Aunt Ada walked her to primary school along remote country lanes during the depression, about an hour each way on the Shropshire/Welsh borders, they lived in a house with no electricity or running water. They did have a wireless valve radio powered by a big battery. Ada taught young Sybil the names of all the wildflowers and birds and this remained an abiding passion all her life.

Today I picked this bunch of sweet peas which grew on my roof terrace, they have been very late this year, and I was very happy to pick this small bunch to celebrate her birthday.

I count my blessings to have had such a kind & grounded mother who always encouraged us to do our best, she did not believe in hothousing kids, didn’t care about exam results, she was just quietly nurturing, encouraging and not judging.

This movie was made in April 2024 it shows the land after the December FLOODS washed away huge chunks of land and BEFORE the storm, when the mango tree was already unstable, here we have Mr William September Farm Managing Partner of Grococoa land talking about the climate challenges we face.

Here is my summary of telephone conversation yesterday with William

“Firstly we give thanks that no lives have been lost.
The impact of Hurricane Beryl has been very, very bad. The whole village of St Patricks and the region of Hermitage has been badly damaged, after the eye of the storm completely flattened our neighbouring island of Carriacou. 75% of all the cocoa trees on the farm have been uprooted. The large mango tree beside the Mott Green Memorial Bridge has fallen over, the roots form part of the integral structure of the bridge foundations. I am very concerned that it might undermine the bridge, then we will have no access to the land.
I am going to get a crew together with chain saws so we can clear the land and plant new trees, this will cost money and may need heavy machinery.
It may take 5 years for the cocoa to be back to full productivity.
I personally feel very shaken when I see the impact of the hurricane of the people and the land,”

We desperately need to do the work to protect the land.

We are currently raising funds to pay for this work, especially for the #gubbionbaskets needed to fill with stones, they are not very expensive.

Celebrating the men in our lives: past, present and future.

This year my family will be celebrating our father Anthony Coady’s 100th anniversary.

He would have been delighted to see that his
grandson Cesar has just become a father to a beautiful baby girl named in honour of her great grandmother, and our mother, Sybil.

Looking through some old photos, we found this great one of Tony, sporting a beard. He had just made a long road trip in the early 1970s, driving from London east through Europe, Turkey, Syria and Iraq, to Kuwait. On the left is my nephew Cesar who, while inheriting the family genes, some people say is a dead ringer for the brilliant Spanish chef Jose Pizarro...

The love of good food eaten with as a family continues through the generations, and Cesar is walking the talk with his Ice Kitchen products, creating “fresh” green Thai curry sticks among others, he will be launching his new range soon.

A photo taken some years back with the late great Rawlyns Smith, who left us in April. @grenadachocolate still going strong, we all miss him so much. His kindness & generosity, his devotion to #chocolate. His pure genius & love of tinkering. One of his favourite expressions to demonstrate his aethiesm was “by the Grace of Chocolate”.
