We visited Lundy in early August, braving various storms and arriving to Mediterranean seas and skies. First thing after the MS Oldenberg docked was to walk our boots through a disinfectant bath to avoid bringing avian flu onto the island - very strict bio-security rules are maintained here to protect the many fragile species.

The highlight of the trip was to observe the puffins on the water in Jenny’s Cove. They have had a very successful breeding season on their protected nesting sites, and together with their pufflings were getting ready to depart for the winter.

We stayed in Hanmers: a beautiful renovated simple fisherman’s cottage perched on the edge of the cliff overlooking the landing jetty, perfectly placed for spectacular sunrises (storms permitting) and a great venue for our favourite (and aptly named) dark and stormy cocktails. Like all Lundy properties this is managed and maintained to a high standard by the Landmark Trust.

One essential addition to our luggage was a bottle of Tidal Rum* that we sipped while the second storm was raging.
|
At night after “lights out” we witnessed the extraordinary noise of hundreds of Manx Shearwaters returning to roost just above the cottage. They are really quite boisterous, and the colony is thriving - like the puffins and other sea birds they enjoy a rat free island.
